Clay County Rejects 2019 Sales Tax Vote As Duval Schools Push For Similar Referendum

  • The Clay County Commission Tuesday rejected placing a half-cent sales tax for school funding on the ballot this year, according to WJCT-News partner The Florida Times Union.

At the same time, dozens turned out Tuesday at an NAACP community forum in Jacksonville to urge the incoming City Council to put a similar half-cent sales tax before voters this November.

  • No thanks .. how about using the $156M Tax payer funding from lot J … vote No
  • News4jax must be part of this tax. They keep re-running this half cent tax crap to help get voters to vote for it.
  • If the tax gets passed, all of our purchases – Fuel (Shell), Groceries (Publix, Fresh Market), Restaurants (Metro, Tidbits, Outback, Longhorn, Dolcee’s) will be moved to businesses in St. Johns County. All of our business expenses (Lowes 25K in 2019, 19K in 2020, Home Depot 6K 2020) will be moved to St. Johns County. Duval county will receive $0. City Council and Mayors office should be spending the $100 Million plus on our schools, NOT THE JAGUARS development of Lot J. City Hall has its priorities wrong. Sorry, but the current mayor has been a bust. I thought Peyton was a bad mayor, but…
  • Don’t change the name of Robert E. Lee High School and you will have the money you were going to spend on the name change.
  • But they can give 150 million to football man but need to do a tax play to help the schools. Jacksonville is the swamp.
  • Throwing tax dollars into a system that is designed to only create mediocre, compliant hard working class of laborers and warfighters only lines the pocket of the contractors hired to sustain the lie…
  • LIKE WE DON’T PAY ENOUGH TAXES ON SCHOOLS ALREADY.I sent my kid to a private school what did they do with all that money I gave them?School teachers aside Principals should not be getting 80 grand a year.
  • I’d give more if the teachers would actually teach people how to pronounce “ask” properly.
  • DUVAL Schools are falling apart,
A portion of the older part of the City is STILL on SEPTIC TANKS,
that was PAID FOR and supposed to have been fixed DECADES Ago,
    IN the CONSOLIDATION CHARTER,
And has been paid for with tax dollars DECADES Ago,
But of Course the Money was BLOWN somewhere else,
They are now BEGGING for A 1/2 cent TAX to BAIL the cities FAILURES again,
The SCHOOLS which have received BILLIONS from the lottery,
    BUT WAS BLOWN elsewhere,
Yet Jacksonville’s cockeyed CORRUPT INCOMPETENT City hall,
YES the Same Corrupt CLOWNS that tried to sell JEA out from under the citizens, (the owners),
The CLOWNS led by the head CORRUPT CRIMINAL CURRY,
who PERSONALLY packed JEAs board with his BUDDIES,
and was set to receive a MULTI MILLION DOLLAR BRIBE, er I mean sales BONUS,
are NOW planning on blowing a 100 MILLION plus TAX DOLLARS on a Downtown Venue,
Remember the last time we spent 100’s of millions of tax dollars on a downtown venue,
REMEMBER the LANDING, which is now a 100 plus MILLION dollar EMPTY FIELD?
Remember the Other 100’s of MILLIONS on the Downtown high rise venue,
STILL an empty shell and TAX Liability,
How about NOT Blowing our tax dollars on ANOTHER Downtown Venue, and FIXING What WE the Tax Payers have already PAID FOR.
  • A lot of people have forgotten that before the Lottery we raise taxes on beer and liquor. This was back in mid 70’s.I’m still paying that tax and a few lottery dollars more and still give me more.
  • I remember the idea of the lottery being “sold” to us Florida voters in 1986 because it would benefit schools. I think the bulk went to fund scholarships and to A-graded schools instead of ones that probably needed the money the most. The second thing I remember from some point in the 1990’s was that when the educational trust fund began receiving lottery money, equal amounts of money that the fund used to receive was sent to prisons. I guess they thought telling us the lottery would help schools seemed like a better pitch than to tell us it would improve prisons. My understanding, the schools received no ‘additional’ money from lottery ticket sales, it just gets moved around on the budget. We’ve been lied to before about “helping the schools.” . . . Oh, I just saw David’s post below. They remember the lotto lie.
  • This tax is the oldest trick in the book. However much extra Revenue this tax brings in, will be the exact amount they decrease the education budget the following year. Remember the Florida Lotto? That was supposed to go to education. Instead they just decreased the other money they were putting into it from the budget and spent it on other things. Net zero as they say.
  • Also the commercial with Lenny Curry supporting the tax, that’s hilarious considering the fact he’s the one who sets the budget in the first place. If the schools are being neglected as he claims, it’s his own fault for not budgeting more. edited
  • Jacksonville wants to spend over $500mil on Lot J by the stadium, spend another $200mil on rebuilding old condemned asbestos out of code buildings in downtown ,instead of demo and rebuild new, because that makes sense. The same downtown where there is homeless people everywhere sleeping, deficating, urinating, in plain sight on the sidewalks and just everywhere, riots with BLM, and crime so bad they tore down The Landing, and shooting on a regular basis. Jacksonville is violent in that area. The schools are falling apart. The oldest schools in the state. They need a penny tax? No, they need better management. This is the stupidest place with the stupidest people running it.
  • Can you do a story that breaks down the DCPS budget? How much money do they receive from the Fl Lottery? How much money do they receive from the school taxes that are collected as part of property taxes, etc. What items are they spending their current budget on?
  • Excellent question!!
  • Does anyone believe that the poorest communities will get more money, if so u r smoking to much grass. Again the tax payers will foot the bill along with the $150 million for lot-J development. The mayor and council must think we r all stupid. My vote was and is NO.
  • Great story but that’s a no vote from me dawg
  • It is the states responsibility to provide funds for the schools.
  • Us taxpayers already pay too much we it’s called double taxation when you pay tax for what you make and what you spend . Where’s All the money going to for the florida lottery ? Oh forgot that we also have high property taxes I’ll vote for no more new taxes.
  • Florida Lottery money: 50% goes to pay winners, 50% goes to Education and most of that goes to fund Bright Futures Scholarships for college. Very little to K-12 Education statewide.
  • All will benefit here in Duval if the schools are solid if nothing more than your property values. Obviously, you are not that informed on the matter if you are still inquiring about lottery proceeds. If you’re going to comment on something, share truth. Do a goole search to learn more….
  • If we use past priorities and behaviors as our guide, the first $50M of the proposed half-cent sales tax will go to schools, then the next $152M will go to Lot J, and the rest will be applied to city’s $2.4B unfunded pension liability. And in 5 years or less, the city council will be begging for a new tax to fund our “dilapidated” schools.
  • The City of Jax will NOT get any of these new tax funds. It will go to DCPS, not COJ. NOT Lot J, NOT pension liability.
  • NO, but the CITY will DEDUCT the amount DCPS gets from the 1/2 penny TAX,
and BLOW that now Re-APPROPRIATED TAX money ELSEWHERE,
SO its just moving shell game,
and the same incompetence and corruption,
    the same GANG,
with MORE Tax Dollars to BLOW.
  • does anyone ever ask why duval never has enough money to fix its schools? who is doing the accounting for duval schools!?!?!
  • Not the School Board…not the City Council it’s ethereal you know like magic from the taxpayer’s pocket to theirs.. here is the deal.. they will keep not teaching the children, not repairing the schools and generally ignoring the issues and our local government will keep stealing the money…like from a certain downtown and next to the river parking lot. OOps.. somehow misplaced that escrowed money from the sale?? WOW! Mismanage much? Did it end up in the DIA slush fund for meals out and parties at our expense? Why aren’t the schools repaired? Why isn’t the flooding in the North side addressed? Why? Don’t bother to ask anyone in the City Council.. they are too busy planning changes to our city without the constituents input to answer. but their crooked mugs will be out there come election season! Let’s get rid of them.. lock, stock and barrel! Worst City Council EVER! Especially LeAnna Cumber the transplant. But I’m not bitter! Pfffffft!! 😉

  • I’m voting against it for a few reasons. They said when they renamed Forrest high school stating the students couldn’t learn because it was named after Confederate soldier and that they would pay for it to be renamed and everything that went along with that. That was a lie. They change the name and they’re still just as bad a school as ever. To top it off they never paid to have it done the taxpayers did. What happened to the lottery money who knows. ?? When I was growing up they bused me downtown to go to schools over there and I had to learn in whatever school I went to. Now what was the point in that? The kids down town had to be bused to the westside. Did they learn more than I did because they were in a newer school? The teachers at the dilapidated school should be as good as the ones that are in the new school. If a roof is leaking have it fixed, but if the kids are tearing up the schools because they have no discipline, that should be corrected. That seems to be the case in most situations. I just don’t trust them to use the money accurately.
  • Don’t be fooled by them selling this for the kids and a safe environment. The millions they have spent in the past proves they are wasteful. More money is more waste. Until there is an audit of their operating budget I will be voting AGAINST. Do your homework!
  • I have a lot of teacher and school administrators as friends and the ones I’ve talked to about this say No!
